Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV 2CD [2008]

Hey another good music release! This unknown ;) scene group (NiNEiNCHNAiLS) released some fine industrial music about 3 hours ago, for all you industrial lovers. The store date is 08.04.08, so get a good impression now, before you buy it :P. The album is available in many different ways, including a free download of the first volume, a $5 digital download, a $10 double CD set, a $75 deluxe edition set and a $300 Ultra-Deluxe limited edition package, which sold out all 2500 copies.

Nine Inch Nails is an industrial rock act. Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for its direction. NIN’s music straddles a wide range of genres, while retaining a characteristic sound using electronic instruments and processing. After recording a new album, Reznor usually assembles a live band to perform with him; this live component is a separate entity from Nine Inch Nails in the recording studio.

Note: Someone did the WEB rip, so here is the retail cd + proof !

I’d hardly describe this album as ‘Industrial’. It’s as far from that as possible - it’s ambient, minimalist & instrumental. There’s no screaming in sight. Still great though.

first time ever for me to complain here but this is really really really old guys. but still a great release…

  20. MelC
    April 2nd, 2008 | 19:07

alexi: lol what has screaming got to do with industrial?

I’d agree it’s not industrial - NiN are a pop version of industrial - like the backstreet boys are to rnb.

Liquidmonkey: it is NOT old - the web version was old, this is from retail CD. Very different things.

What happened to NIN? This isn’t music, it’s stupid ambient sounds played at low volume. What an utter waste of studio time. I think I kept maybe 3 songs off the entire album. Tracks without singing are great when the music rocks like Metallica’s “Orion” or Bob Marley’s “Jamacia Rum” but I couldn’t find one 4/5 star song on the entire album. Bah now I’m all pissed off, NIN used to own.

to me the songs sound incomplete no singing on any songs and seem like the songs where just put together fast make fast $$$

    April 2nd, 2008 | 20:26

hehe at the “no signing/lyrics” people. I guess none of you are industrial, powerdrone, power electronics or dark/industrial-ambient fans.

Again, I think this sucks, but not because of a lack of lyrics but because of how derivative it is.

Another rezner cash in, as bad and bland as all NIN stuff (as well as everything rezner has ever been involved with (especially The Innocent) with the exception of revco, and he had little input there).

    Trent Reznor-
“Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Trent Reznor explains, “I’ve been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn’t have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I’m very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts.”
Songs are released under Creative Commons license meaning you can use these songs freely for film projects or whatever you like.
Seems pretty generous to me considering he gave away the first cd free to download.
Can’t really think of any other artists other than Radiohead who even come close.

it is NOT a 4CD release. The FLAC is from the website http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options and has never been near a CD.

The Retail CD that is due out next week is on TWO CD’S for $10 (go look at the official site I linked above).

NIN actually wrote the song “Hurt” witch is better known when good old Johnny Cash preforms it.

Anyone who says NIN are a pop version of idustrial is a genius. They are weak & mediocre and i hate when i use the word industrial, ppl spout out them or ministry, shame why are you here industrial fans?? You should be getting real industrial like KMFDM or , raymond watts is a genius and has a voice that makes reznor look like ricky martin.

    April 2nd, 2008 | 21:30

    Lol@KMFDM-doin.it.again:
NIN never wanted to be industrial. The media called them an “Industrial” band, not Reznor.

I’m really into ambient music (great background music) so this is a great album, especially the Ghosts IV segment.

WOW; I have been into ambient music a lot lately, and this is exactly what I would expect an instrumental CD by NiN would sound like! I´m gonna buy this CD tomorrow, its worth 10 bucks..:D

    NIN are Industrial INFLUENCED…
Industrial music died in the 90’s along with Wax Trax records.
As far as KMFDM and Raymond Watts(of PIG), they can’t write a song to save their lives.
Skinny Puppy Rules all the way.
I find it kinda funny when people whine about something they are getting for FREE…
Why release a cd in the first place? to make MONEY why else?!
I hate to break it to you, but the world doesn’t run on LOVE.
Trent Reznor is truly one of the last great artists working today, and am happy he is still releasing innovative records and challenging the music industry head on.

why put up a NIN LIVE band pic? it’s NIN only reznor and his geek buddies, not the rock star long haired guitar trashing gnome from the dork stein weisteinland.

NiN have become really boring but I must say that one album of theirs I like a lot. That would be Pretty Hate Machine. After that is all went downhill.

@34 KMFDM suck as far as I am concerned too. For proper heavy industrial music you need to check out Godflesh (sadly now disbanded) and early Swans. Their album Filth pioneered the sound.

The whole thing started with the likes of Throbbing Gristle, SpK.

KMFDN are weak in comparison to all these bands.

    Godflesh:

  44. MelC
    April 3rd, 2008 | 01:15

whats with all the people naming industrial metal bands as a citation for good industrial music?

None of them are true industrial, which has very little to do with metal.

Got to love throbbing gristle though, they are one of the pioneers.

Also industrial is far from dead, with lots of Martial Industrial and EBM/hellektro along with dark electro artists creating new and interesting stuff.

waxtrax dying wasn’t a massive issue (still a shame), as most artists are euro and signed to euro labels. still, would be nice if waxtrax! was still running.

Well I had said “Heavy” industrial music and I did in fact mention Throbbing Gristle and SpK (Socialist Patients Kollective, Surgical Penis Klinic etc etc :P) Oh, don’t forget Foetus :D

    April 9th, 2008 | 17:19

#50+#51 : LOL!! I have to admit, I have always been a Nine Inch Nails fan since the start. I have all halos (purchased) and I will most likely purchase this collection as well. It has been interesting to see Trent’s fluctuation from the heavier and more widely known songs like, “Head Like A Hole,” and “Closer,” to the more diversified (and in some ways more complex and interesting), songs like, “La Mer,” and “The Great Below.” I won’t even begin to go into the “They’re industrial!” “No they’re not!” argument. Seems pointless, and I believe someone has already pointed out that everyone is entitled to their opinions. And that is the luxury we all share. I’ll give the album(s) a listen and then post my review and final thoughts. Also, I just wanted to thank RLSLOG for providing such good content. It has always been a pleasure finding new/popular and obscure/rare entertainment on this site.
